Nilgir Thar Population Increases during Lock Down

Record Number of Nilgiri Thar Birth at Eravikulam National Park

 First time in the history of Eravikulam (Rajamala) National Park, calving season yielded 155 new births of Nilgiri Thar. The breeding season of Nilgiri Thar is from Mid January to April. The Park was closed on January 26. 

The total number of Nilgiri Thar now rose to 726. The number of new birth in last year was 91. The number in 2018 was 75 and 87 in 2017.

Eravikulam National Park is a 97km2 national park located in the Idukki district of Kerala in India. The park holds the largest population of the endangered Nilgiri Thar and is famous habitat of Neelakurinji, which blooms once in 12 years. The next Neelakurinji season will be in 2030

Eravikulam National Park is one of the most visited tourist destination in Munnar.
