Madhugiri Fort Trekking, Tumkur

Madhugiri Hill or Madhugiri Betta is one of the largest monoliths with a height of 3930ft and is one of the adventurous trekking spot located at a distance of 105Km from Bangalore. The Madhugiri fort is said to be built around 1678 during the reign of Raja Hera Gowda. Madhugiri fort trekking is little technical and steeper than most of the treks around Bangalore.

There is no entrance fee at the Madhugiri Fort. So it is best advised to start the trek as early as possible. The hill is surrounded by walls of the fort and all through the climb up one can find the walls of the once glorious fort. Several gates such as the Antaralada Bagilu, Diddibagilu and the Mysore Gate lead one to the top of the hill. The trek started at the Mughal style arch at the entrance of the fort. Newly constructed steps were there in the initial part of the trek for 200meters. In some places small steps were carved out on the rocks. These steps helped to climb the steep slopes. Madhugiri fort had nice water channeling system right from the top. There is a pond in the beginning of the trek, which is used as the main source of water in Madhugiri fort. At each of the level there were many bastions. The bastions gave a complete view of the city.

Initial part of the trek was easy as there are steps to almost half of the way. Later the trek will become steeper. The second part of the trek was really steep and challenging. Iron rods and side pillars are provided for support. At some points the handle bars are damaged and ropes are tied on both ends for support. This part of the trekking will be little scary. We had to walk horizontally across a steeply inclined rock. You should be more careful if there was drizzling on previous day night as there is chance for slippery rocks.

We will be thinking that this is the last part of the trek, but the defensive wall of the fort was hiding the last hill to the top of Madhugiri, where the granaries and temples are situated. There were no railings and no steps carved out in the final part of the trek. Walking on steep rocks without support is not that difficult. On top of the madhugiri hill, there are old buildings which are room for the soldiers. There is a temple dedicated to lord Gopalakrishna. Both the temple and the fort stand in a ruined condition today due to the poor maintenance of the area.

On top of the madhugiri hill, there are old buildings which are room for the soldiers. There is a temple dedicated to lord Gopalakrishna. Both the temple and the fort stand in a ruined condition today due to the poor maintenance of the area.

How to Reach Madhugiri

Madhugiri is located at a distance of 105Km from Bangalore. From Bangalore take the Tumkur Highway, cross Dobaspet and then take a right turn below the Dobaspet flyover. Madhugiri is about 56km from Dobaspet. Several KSRTC buses operate from Majestic, Bangalore platform 4 to Pavagada via Madhugiri. The buses are available at a frequency of around 15 minutes.
